Folk Hymnody and
the Old Singing Schools of America

Stephen Conte and Prairie Harmony, Instructors

Explore the roots of the shape note folk revival from meeting house to performance art of the modern folk music era with this class – a harmony singing study of early American anthems, psalms and hymns of the shape note traditions of singing.  Learn about our old American singing forms by singing through a progression of hymnody found in the old shape note singing books such as The Sacred Harp. This program will be led by singing school master and widely-traveled song catcher, Stephen Conte.  Stephen is highly knowledgeable and experienced in this form of folk music.  If you can carry a tune, come along and sing.  All are welcome to come and listen.  This will be an interesting and unique hands-on exploration of early American hymnody.
