Students will learn the basics of writing short stories and poetry with an emphasis on preparing work for publication. Standard manuscript format, querying, and an overview of the submission/publication process will be covered. Classes would be two days in length, with an overnight assignment of at least one flash fiction short story (under 1000 words in length, using the Six Sentences format) and at least one poem (probably haiku or tanka). On the second day we will proofread, edit, and critique each story and poem as a group.
At the end of the year, all students' short stories will be collected, edited, and published in a special edition "Villages Folk School" print anthology by Six Sentences, edited by myself and 6S editor, Robert McEvily.
