Beginning Hammered Dulcimer

Jeff Nayadley, Instructor

The hammered dulcimer’s history in America goes back to the early colonists before the founding of this nation and, thus, has a firm root in the musical heritage of the United States.  Thankfully, old-time players have kept the tradition of playing this instrument alive through the years.

In this introductory class, students will explore the basics of learning to play this unique and beautiful folk instrument: the layout of the hammered dulcimer, how to locate notes, hold and use the hammers and play basic scales and chords.  Students will leave the class having learned a simple tune and enough information to continue with their own exploration of the instrument. Instruments for the class will be provided.
